biography

Erika Soteri is a powerhouse performer, singer-songwriter who embodies attitude and class and houses a timeless retro sound with a modern flair. Deriving from a mixed background, Erika was born in London but has spent most of her years living in Cyprus.

Much like her roots, Erika Soteri’s sound is an eclectic mix and tends to marry a fusion of Soul, Jazz, Funk and RnB.

The up-and-coming artist recently gained exposure following her success on the talent show The Voice of Greece. All 4 judges instantly turned around and fought to have Erika join their team. After her decision to join Eurovision’s sweetheart, Helena Paparizou’s team, Erika made it through the semi-finals of the show.

In parallel to her success on The Voice of Greece, Erika recently graduated with a First Class Honours in BA (Hons) Music Industry Practice from The Academy of Contemporary Music, where she studied under the likes of Jono McNeil (Michael Buble, Nelly, George Ezra), Katie Hector (Emile Sande, Jessie J, Tom Jones) and Brian Henry (Soul II Soul, Chaka Khan, Incognito).

During her first year at The Academy of Contemporary, at the age of 19, Erika released her debut single ‘Pablo’, which she wrote and co-produced. 'Erika Soteri’s debut single 'Pablo' is a slinky neo-jazz, funk fusion, delivering soft and refined vocals with touches of slap bass and stylish piano-work. With intelligently-constructed lyrics such as “This man is no Picasso but he loves artistically”, Erika construes an explicit maturity, mismatched from her ripe age of a mere 19 years. Being described as the lovechild of Sade and Amy Winehouse, her style is classically elegant and refreshing; an artist that will no doubt be cutting through mainstream and introducing the industry to a sound that is timeless yet still thoroughly original.' - (ACM's Top 5 Tracks Of The Week - ACM).

Being born into a family of musicians and creatives, Erika was organically sucked into the world of the arts. Having a father who is singer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader, a young and curious Erika wondered around her dad’s home recording studio and found herself indulging into the sounds of artists such as Stevie Wonder and Sade. Her parents instantly recognized her own talents and at the age of 2, Erika was enrolled her into a school of the Performing Arts, where she began acting, dancing, singing and playing the piano.

Growing up, she lived up to the title of being a "triple threat". As a dancer she was mostly trained in Latin Ballroom and Hip Hop and began competing in national dance competitions at the age of 8 and has been awarded first and second place several times throughout the years. At the age of 13 she began working as a dance teacher’s assistant and later on began teaching her own classes of Hip Hop, Modern Jazz, Ballet, Latin Dance and Belly Dance to people ranging from the ages of 3 to 50 years-old. Dance is a huge passion and form of expression for Erika and she hopes to further incorporate that in her visual arts and live shows as a music artist.

Despite later going on to study a Performing Arts degree in Cambridge, majoring in Acting, Erika continued to pursue her love for music outside of her university studies and also participated in the talent show TeenStar, making it to the Grand Regional Final of the show, which got her noticed by British music promoter, record producer, musician, label owner and talent scout, Chris Grayston (Birdy, Luke Friend, Lucy Spraggan). After completing her first year at university, Erika spent the summer back home in Cyprus, selling out shows twice a week as a solo artist. Her newfound growth of love and passion for music motivated her to listen to her heart’s yearning, to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. Thus, she made the decision not to return to Cambridge and decided to further her studies in music at The Academy of Contemporary Music.

Since then, Erika Soteri has performed with her band and as a solo artist around the UK, Cyprus and Greece. She has released several successful singles and is currently working on her debut EP in the studio. Her latest release ‘The American Dream’ showcases Erika’s elaborate, fervent lyrics and sparkling melodies yet again. The lyrics of the song shed a light on the corruption of the music industry and sacrifices one must make in order to achieve success. It carries a melancholic tone, as it plays with the innocence of a child’s dream versus the dark reality of trying to attain that dream. The track has a raw, authentic feel, in its lyrics and instrumentation that will speak to people's souls. Erika also had the pleasure of working with LA film director, writer & producer, Savvas Christou, on creating the visual for the 'The American Dream' , which is available to watch now on YouTube.
